Bee keeping is one of the fastest growing hobbies in Britain, with around 80,000 hives registered. They’re not all in quaint little country gardens either, far from it in fact, but many urban bee keepers are finding space for their hives on roof tops, down side alleys and in miniscule city gardens.

Looking out of my kitchen window over Christmas, the back garden was looking a bit forlorn and devoid of life, without a green shoot or buzzing bee in sight. However, a stocking filler booklet from the RSPB about making your garden more bird and wildlife friendly (thanks mum) assured me that there are is still plenty of life out there, but it’s tough going at the moment for them.

According to a recent poll by the Ramblers Association, 249 million visits were made to coastal locations in the last year, with Kimmeridge to Durdle Door on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset topping the list of favourite walks.

According to the latest edition of the Good Beach Guide, launched last week by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), 461 UK beaches have excellent bathing water quality which is the third highest number in the Guide’s 24 year history.
