I’m a bit of a sucker for motivational books, and Dame Kelly Holmes’ Just go for it was the latest tome to end up in my stocking this Christmas. As a double Olympic gold medallist, she’s a pretty good person to take advice from when it comes to achieving your goals, and with only 5% of our New Year resolutions lasting the entire year, it seems we could all do with some help in that area.
My list currently includes learning to kite surf, hiking more of the UK’s national trails, creating a more wildlife friendly garden and saving up for a camper van!
So far, so good, as Holmes’ first tip is to ‘be specific’. Other tips include working out mini steps in order to achieve the goal, making time for it (for example even 10 mins of research on the internet is better than nothing), visualising yourself achieving it, reminding yourself of why you’re doing it and rewarding yourself along the way.
So whenever I’m tempted to buy an extra cheeky latte, I’m going to look at my 2012 VW Camper calendar and remember to save the pennies and keep my eye on the prize. Yes I know it’s a bit geeky, but hey you’ve gotta do whatever it takes…
What will your outdoor resolutions be for 2012? Big or small, I’d love to hear about them.

My outdoor resolution for 2011 is to swim the length of the Thames (very slowly).
Wow, that would be amazing! Am sure the OSS could help you with planning that one. http://www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com/index.php?p=home
I live pretty close to the Thames actually, near Hampton Court, make sure you wave as you swim past! ; – )
