Now that the autumn heat wave is well and truly past, it’s the time to dust off the waterproofs, check your lights, and don an attractive reflective vest. Yes FAF’ers, it’s time to get ready for some serious all weather cycling…
What you’ll need:
Lights. Front and back. It’s easy to miscalculate how visible you are to other drivers, even in daylight. Have a look around next time you’re in the car and see how easily cyclists can blend in to the surroundings. Check the batteries frequently, as they have a tendency to switch themselves on in the bottom of your pannier and flash away all day!
Mudguards. A streak of mud up the back of your work outfit is not the best look. Or splattered shoes. Mudguards will help a lot, but it’s hard to avoid a bit of splashing in the depths of winter. I usually pack my work clothes separately and don my hardcore cyclist gear for the commute.
Jacket. Speaking of hardcore cyclist gear, a good cycling jacket will make all the difference. You need something that allows you to move freely, keeps you dry and offers visibility. Good jackets will include reflective details, or be a bold block colour. If you feel self conscious, just remember that visibility = safety.
Servicing. Chain sounding a bit rattly? Gears sticking a bit? Can’t remember what colour your bike is because it’s so caked in mud? Take it down to your local bike shop for a bit of TLC. It may cost you up to £50, plus expenses for replacement parts, but the bike will love you for it and carry you through the winter with months of loyal service.
