More ideas this week for active days out from the capital. Guest blogger Richard Garland from Ellis Brigham, their outdoor equipment specialist, suggests some watersports in Whitstable, or a high wire adventure in Wendover Woods.
5. Water-sports in Whitstable, Kent
Famous for its oysters and water-sports Whitstable is a great day out from London for some serious water based activity. The town boasts one of the oldest yacht clubs in England and hosts the International Water-ski Championships every year. The shallow and sheltered waters make Whitstable an ideal environment in which to get to grips with a spot of water-skiing, windsurfing or kite surfing. There’s also some great spots for sea swimming in one of the first safe sea-bathing points available from South London. Head out towards the beach huts on the way to Seasalter and stash your towels and clothes in the natural hidey holes in the rocks. The shoreline has been worked into a nice steep ramp so you don’t have to wade in. Soled swimming footwear is recommended as the shingle is sharp.
6.Wendover Woods and Coombe Hill, The Chilterns, Buckinghamshire
Trains from Marylebone will whisk you to the historic market town of Wendover in around 50 minutes. Spend the morning exploring Wendover Woods with its walking and bike trails and a high wire adventure course at Go Ape. Take your own bike and you can ride the two and a half miles to the main entrance and start of the cycle paths that run through Wendover Woods, or you can walk along Wendover High Street and then follow signposts marked Ridgeway. Head back down into Wendover, fuel up with lunch at one of the many great pubs, or gorge yourself in the Rumsey’s Chocolatiere, before walking up to Coombe Hill Monument for incredible views across Aylesbury Vale.
Next week… Wild swimming and a cycle ride to the coast
