Inspiring teenager from Surrey is youngest to climb Everest

16 year old George Atkinson from Surbiton, became last week the youngest person to scale the highest mountains on every continent, including Everest

The British Mountaineering Council confirmed George’s record, who was aged 16 years and 362 days when he reached the summit of Mount Everest, breaking the record of US teenager Johnny Collinson, who completed the challenge at the age of 17 last year.

Atkinson had already climbed the three highest peaks in the UK by the age of seven, and started the Seven Summits challenge in 2005, at the age of 11, when he climbed Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, followed by Russia’s Mount Elbrus in 2007.

He then climbed Russia’s Mount Elbrus in 2007 and reached the summits of Indonesia’s Carstensz Pyramid and Argentina’s Mount Aconcagua in 2008. Mount McKinley in North America was next, followed by Mount Vinson in Antarctica which he climbed late last year.

He spoke to BBC Surrey prior to his attempt on Everest, saying “It would mean an awful lot to get to the top of Everest. I’m not doing it just to get the record. I find it a good challenge. If I got the record it would be the cherry on top and finish it off well.”
