Discover the Lake District’s hidden gems by leaving the car behind

That’s the message from Amy McLoughlin at the Nurture Lakeland campaign, who tells us how to find the best spots in the Lakes by bike, by boat, or on foot…

“More than 15 million visitors are drawn to the Lake District every year to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes. However, many of them are finding it hard to get the right information to enjoy the freedom of exploring our fells and lakes without their car. This means they end up driving to find beauty spots or access to mountain walks. Not only is this bad for the environment, traffic jams can ruin your day and spending time in your car means you’re not connecting with the area as best you could.

Nurture Lakeland’s “Fresh Air is Free” campaign is working to remedy this problem. The campaign is pointing guests in the right direction to the heaps of information that help guests give their car a holiday and fill in any gaps by making it as easy as possible to leave their place of stay and soak up the views and breath in that good old fresh Lakeland air!

Nurture LakelandNurture Lakeland is working with fifty accommodation businesses in the Lake District and creating bespoke mini-guides for their guests. These guides are designed specifically with guests in mind, helping them find hidden gems and tourist hot spots without their car. They’re not being boring about it either and shoving people on buses, it’s all about getting visitors to places by foot, on bike or boat so that travelling to these fantastic destinations is part of the experience. The fact that using your car less will help keep the Lake District a clean and beautiful place to visit for many more years is an added bonus!

Whilst only fifty businesses are currently getting their mitts on these useful guides, Nurture Lakeland are urging guests to stretch your legs and explore what’s just around the corner you’re your hotel or campsite. Ask your host how you can enjoy fresh air and get to know the local area. The Lake District is bursting at the seams with walks to suit all abilities, tranquil lakes to row across, striking rock formations to climb, charming woodlands to wander through, babbling ghylls to scramble, lakeside beaches to watch the sun go down on… Do we need to go on!”
