Add a whole new dimension to your outdoor swims by joining a night time swim organised by members of the Outdoor Swimming Society.
There are a few dates left this year, and they’ve done the leg work already by calculating 2010′s moon-rise / sunset times:
Thurs 23 Sept, 06:30 pm / 07:00 pm
Saturday 23 Oct, 05:30 pm / 05:50 pm
Sunday 21 Nov, 03:30 pm / 04:05 pm
Tuesday 21 Dec, 04:05 pm / 03:55 pm
All times are in GMT/UTC to the nearest five minutes.
Kate Rew, founder of the OSS explains in her book, Wild Swim what makes these swims so magical, “At full moon the water shines like mercury as it curves over underwater hands. One night we swim in silence, sculling long with hands and feet not breaking the surface of the water, our surroundings noiseless but for the odd lap against the lush, wet riverbanks. We creep past chub and roach, and, hidden in the dark water, they creep past us.”
These swims are of course undertaken entirely at your own risk, as there are plenty of safety considerations to take into account. Keep an eye on the OSS website and facebook page for organised events or informal gatherings.
