Each October, thousands of people gather in the small English village of Ashton to watch competitors from 13 countries battle it out in the World Conker Championships.
You can’t use your own conkers, but must use one of the 2,283 horse chestnuts which have been painstakingly collected, drilled and strung by officials from Ashton Conker Club.
The games follow strict rules and are played out under the watchful eye of two stewards, whilst a commentator gives spectators the low-down on every blow. The striker has three shots and the opponent then has three shots, and the game continues until a conker is smashed.
Sounds like childs play? Then sign up quick for one of the remaining places, and get practising your swing. Apparently the secret is not to flinch when the opposing conker is coming your way…
