Windsurfing has come a long way in the last few years and Andy Bubble Chambers, current British Freestyle Champion, assures us that it’s now possible to be up and running after just an hour’s taster session. Read his top tips for getting started in our latest ‘Have a go’ guide to… windsurfing.
How did you get started in windsurfing?
I actually spent a lot of time as a kid in Cyprus so was able to get into it then. Back then there wasn’t the equipment to make it very easy to learn especially if you were small! I spent a lot of time at the beach and my parents started getting into it with my friend’s parents. It wasn’t long before my friends and I started learning too!
Nowadays in the UK the manufacturers have all of the right equipment which has made it so easy to learn. There are lots of fantastic clubs which offer beginner lessons all over the country. Its great fun to get a few mates and go and have a try.
How long will it take me to learn?
Nowadays the learning curve is so fast and the level of the tuition is amazing! Even after an hour taster session you will be going back and forth and starting to turn around, and from then onwards it just keeps going. The beauty of windsurfing is that there is always something new to learn. Even if you are the best in the world.
Is it better to learn on the sea or a lake/reservoir?
Anywhere really where the wind is light and consistent. Flat water will also make it a lot easier to learn.
Is the sail heavy?
They used to be! But not now, the equipment is super lightweight and stronger than before. The beginner equipment is especially light.
If it’s windy, will I end up going really fast ?
Yes, if you want to! Its up to you how fast you go. The top guys in the world are going upwards of 50mph!
Can you windsurf all year in the UK or does it get too cold?
Oohhhh… some hardcore people do windsurf all year round in the UK. However in the winter time it does get a bit cold! Its perfect to go away in the winter to warmer climes and go windsurfing at some of the best centres in the world!
