If you’re sailing through the Solent on 14th August and spot a cricket match taking place in the middle of the shipping lane, don’t be alarmed. For the locals, this is all perfectly normal…
The Brambles Bank appears in the Solent only few times a year on the lowest spring tides, and each August two local sailing clubs play a half hour cricket match on the bank before the tide returns.
The match dates back to the 1950’s when inmates from Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight first played cricket on Brambles Bank where prison officers believed the convicts couldn’t escape. Players from the Royal Southern Yacht Club, Hamble and The Island Sailing Club on the Isle of Wight carried on the tradition from 1984 and have battled it out ever since though they in fact take it in turns to ‘win’.
This year’s match will take place around 8.30am on 14th August so you’ll have to hitch an early ride out to see them, or just check out this You Tube vid.
