If you have ever wanted to take part in the iconic Cowes Week, one of the UK’s biggest sailing events, but you have limited or no sailing experience, then now is your chance! Laser Performance and Pelican Racing have teamed up to offer members of the public the opportunity to ‘Come Racing’ at Cowes Week 2010.
Cowes Week first took place in 1826 and is the longest running sporting event in the history of the UK. It offers 8 days of sailing from the 31st July – 7th August in the beautiful Solent off Cowes in the Isle of Wight.
Over 8000 sailors are expected to compete each day during the course of the week, and this could be your chance to ‘learn the ropes’.
‘Come Racing’ will run from Saturday 31st July to Thursday 5th August 2010, starting at 4pm, and offers the chance to get afloat and having a go on 10 Laser SB3s, helmed by RYA qualified skippers. They will teach the crew members some basic sailing skills and the session will finish with a short race against the 9 other Laser SB3s.
To take part, all sailors need to do is bring a pair of soft soled shoes; all other essentials including spray tops and buoyancy aids will be provided. “Cowes Week is an integral part of the British sporting calendar and, as such, it attracts over 100,000 visitors to Cowes,” says Stuart Quarrie, CEO of Cowes Week Limited. “The Come Racing programme by LaserPerformance and Pelican Racing is fantastic and means that anyone can get a taste of racing, whether or not they have previous sailing experience.”
In 2009, Come Racing was a sell out, with all daily sessions fully booked well in advance of Cowes Week, so get in touch with Pelican Racing online or by calling 01983 201587. ‘Come Racing’ costs just £10.00 per person.
If you already have sailing experience but don’t have a boat or crew, then you can post your details on the Cowes Week online crew forum. Or if you’re not planning to sail at all, then the live bands, fireworks, parades, balls and display from the Red Arrows should offer plenty of non-nautical alternatives.
