Bushcraft basics

Bushcraft basics

Ever watched watched Ray Mears on TV and daydreamed about learning the basics of Bushcraft? After all, you never know when you might get caught out in the wilds of Britain and need to knock up a quick fire and forage some supper!

Even if you never need to call upon your skills to actually survive, they can teach us an awful lot about building self-confidence and respecting the natural world. We spoke to the good folk at Woodlore, who run some of the best bushcraft courses around, about what you can expect when you sign up for one of their weekends.

“Bushcraft is all about learning to live outside as part of nature. You can learn the necessary skills by reading and watching DVDs, but the the most effective way to learn is by practicing and experimenting.

BushcraftOn our courses, the first things that people learn are fire lighting, shelter building and water purification. The most useful bits of kit are waterproofs (!), a knife, a first aid kit and a torch. In case you’re worried, we don’t kill any animals on our courses, but if you progress to the more advanced Journeyman course then there is an opportunity to do so.

Your equipment needs for Woodlore courses will be basic, take a look at our handy kit lists to find out what you need to bring. We advise peope not to go out and spend their hard-earned savings on expensive kit and their understanding will almost certainly change after they have completed the course. The Woodlore motto is Learn to carry less by knowing more.”

We hear you Ray, we hear you, “carry less, know more”…
