Travel green in 2010

The Guardian has published its inaugural green travel list for 2010, which features 75 companies that are going the extra mile to show a commitment to community, place and the environment.

In the UK categories, the winning companies offer all sorts of activities including kayaking, mountain biking, surfing and tree climbing, so we thought we’d give you a quick run down of the outdoor activity winners as chosen by The Guardian’s panel of travel and tourism experts.

Best for … mountain bikers

Coed y Brenin Visitor Centre, Wales.

If you’ve been out off from trying mountain biking because of the mud and the cold, then see if this place will change your mind. Once you’re back at base, there are hot showers, good food and the whole visitor centre is kept toasty with a wood fuelled heating system.

Best for … the whole family

BeWILDerwood, Norfolk

Zip wires, treehouses, jungle bridges and marsh walks, it sounds like something out of a childrens’ book, and it is. This place gets its name from a story written by local author Tom Blofeld.

Best for … monkeys

Goodleaf Tree Climbing, Isle of Wight

You might have done your fair share of scrambling up trees as a child, but did you ever make it up to 60ft? These guys will give you all the safety gear and teach you a few techniques to get all the way up one of their mighty oaks, where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view across the Solent.

Best for … surfers

Global Boarders, Cornwall

Northern Cornwall might be more famous for its surf breaks, but the South Coast can certainly hold its own and this Penzance based company is doing its bit to promote the local, lesser known beaches.

Best for … tourers

Off the Rails, Yorkshire and Lancashire

Offering cycling tours around the Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland, their unique selling point is take the hard out by incorporating an uphill train journey, thus leaving you to enjoy all the fun of the downhill. Genius.

Best for … getting away from it all

Wilderness Scotland

This adventure travel company will show you the best of Scotland, whether its from a yacht, kayak or your own two feet. They also run photography courses and more recently, Guide Training if you really want to make the outdoors a way of life.

Best for … jumping off cliffs

Preseli Venture, Pembrokeshire

There’s not much these guys don’t offer in the way of outdoor activities, but if you’re coming to this part of the Wales then it would be a crime not to try coasteering, which has its spiritual home in St Davids.

Best for … embracing your inner Ray Mears

The Canoe Man, Norfolk Broads

Explore the Broads from your canoe, sleep under the stars and learn some valuable bushcraft skills.

Best for … sea kayakers

Kayak Adventures, Jersey

The Channel Islands offer some stunning coastal scenery and opportunities to observe marine life, and this outfit ensures that their tours are as low impact as possible to preserve the very wildlife that makes their trips so special.
